What Washing Machine Filters Do

Washing machines use two main types of filters, each serving a distinct purpose:

Lint filters catch fibres, hair, and fluff shed from fabrics during the wash cycle. When a lint filter becomes clogged, it can no longer do its job effectively — you may notice lint and hair left on your freshly washed clothes, reduced wash performance, and longer cycle times.

Drain filters (also called pump filters or coin filters) sit at the point where water exits the machine. They catch debris — coins, buttons, small objects, and accumulated lint — before it reaches the drain pump. A blocked drain filter is one of the most common causes of slow or incomplete draining, leaving clothes soaking wet at the end of a cycle.

Neglecting either filter can also lead to unpleasant odours, mould growth inside the machine, and increased energy consumption as the machine works harder than it should.

Signs Your Filter Needs Replacing

• Clothes are coming out with lint or hair on them after washing
• The machine is draining slowly or not fully emptying
• There is a musty smell from the drum
• The filter housing shows visible cracks, rust, or damage
